Project Search (2009 - 2010 Academic Year)

Over the course of the 2009 - 2010 academic year, the Eastern Ontario PASS Regional Planning Team will engage 100's of students, staff and community members in over 100 various projects. Projects in the region are divided into three major groupings; Activities, Forums, and Dual Credits.

9.3.60 Activity Focus Groups -  SHSM   This is an activity to improve and expand the connections between High Schools that are delivering High Skills Majors in our area and programs at St. Lawrence College.  There are some opportunities that are not now being used.  We will organize a series of meetings to examine specific high skill majors with those schools/boards that are delivering them and specific program areas within the college. 9.3.59 Activity SHSM Connections As a extension to St. Lawrence Connections, students from the local participating School Boards in Grade 7 & 8 and Grade 10 and 11 will have the opportunity to attend a one day hands-on Reach Ahead activities to work toward their SHSM designation. Taking place at all 3 campuses on 2 different days, the exposure to college career pathways will enable students to better understand what is involved in these programs and how their SHSM programs available in the High Schools can potentially benefit them as an additional pathway to post secondary education.  SLC 1, 2, 3, 4, 9  
9.3.55 Activity Connect & WIN This one day symposium will take place at Kingston and Cornwall campuses. Workplace and College-bound students who are working toward their SHSM designation, will have an opportunity to connect with SLC staff , take part in Reach Ahead activities, and connect with employers to learn about the essential skills needed to be successful in their businesses as well as hand in resumes for job opportunities.   SLC 1, 2, 4, 9  
9.3.54 Activity Automotive High Skills Major Certification Training Days  Students working towards their SHSM in Transportation will come to the college for a 1-day certification& Reach Ahead activity. This program will provide industry recognized certification training in Ozone Depletion and Hoist Lift Operation for high school students. SLC - C 2, 9  
9.3.57 Activity Cornwall TIP An apprenticeship career exploration program offered to cooperative education students. SLC - C 1, 2, 4, 9  
9.3.56 Activity GOALs - Girls with Opportunities in Apprenticeship Learning  Gr 11 & 12 all female career exploration of 5 tech programs offered at SLC Cornwall over a 5 week period  SLC - C 1, 2, 4, 9  
9.3.58 Activity Manufacturing Specialist High Skills Major Senior Manufacturing students from 3 Limestone DSB schools, LaSalle SS, Sydenham HS and Napanee DSS will have the opportunity to experience college level programming in the Manufacturing Process as they work toward their SHSM in Manufacturing. Students will use this opportunity as a Reach Ahead Activity. SLC 1, 2, 4, 9  
9.3.47 Activity Experience the Skilled Trades this Summer St. Lawrence College will offer a summer camp for 16 Grade 7 or 8 students for 1 week in July.  Students will experience the skilled trades in 5 different areas:- Culinary Arts, Welding, Robotics, Hairstyling, and Carpentry and will be also be exposed to the Renewable Energy Resources program. Students will have a better understanding of the critical path necessary to gain their SHSM and move on to the appropriate post-secondary pathway.  SLC - K 1, 2, 4, 9  
9.3.53 Activity Comprehensive PASS Evaluation A comprehensive evaluation of regional PASS activities can draw upon four years’ data and offer guidance as to which elements of which kinds of activities have most significant impact so that they can be well-maintained and supported, and further initiatives can be ideally shaped. Essential cost-benefit analysis can be performed including not only quantitative economic considerations, but also qualitative living and values considerations.  The research needs to focus on three areas: dual credits, promotions aimed at non-college students, and promotions aimed at non-college staff and parents.  SLC 1, 2, 4, 9  
9.3.46 Activity Getting Kids Connected to Business A one-day business “skills” competition to increase student and teacher awareness of college business program options. Secondary students will participate in a series of individual and team competitions in areas such as Sales/Marketing, Accounting, Math/Finance and Human Resources.   Students will also be advised of future career and Triple Play opportuntities.   SLC - C 2, 9  
9.3.49 Activity Math Project Expansion St. Lawrence College will offer an on-line diagnostic  math skills test for students to take at their leisure.  Those students that score poorly will have the opportunity to upgrade their skills by accessing the on-line units that will be developed for each unit.  A similar test will be given to all students in the schools of Applied Science and Computing and the School of Business in the first week of school. 9.3.48 Activity Get Ready! Leadership and Business  Senior students (5-6) in the School of Business will deliver workshops focused on leadership skills to Grade 11/12 students in English courses in the local Kingston high schools (9 Schools). The interactive presentations will allow make students aware of the qualities of effective leadership. The areas of development are communication skills, presentation skills, negotiation skills and leadership styles. SLC - K 1, 2, 4, 9

9.2.13 Forum Exploring Cultural Diversity in Rural Communities This forum provides an opportunity for high school teachers and college educators to increase awareness, knowledge and skills in interacting successfully with people from a range of cultural backgrounds. It will examine the concept of culture, intercultural differences, and offer some useful  'tips' to enrich our teaching and learning processes in culturally diverse environments SLC - B 1, 2, 3, 4, 9

13.09.09 Dual Credit COIFFE It Up! The Level 1 Hairstylist OYAP Program at Regiopolis-Notre Dame CHS is a partnership between St. Lawrence College, MTCU and the  Algonquin and Lakeshore CDSB. During the second semester, students from Regiopolis-Notre Dame CHS and Holy Cross CSS will take the Level 1/ Basic Hairstylist 332A apprenticeship at Regiopolis NDCHS instructed by college staff - Monday to Thursday.  SLC - K 1  
  Activity Students Experiencing Technology's Unlimited Possibilities OCRI proposes a technology-learning center for 120 OCSB and OCDSB (grade10-12) students. One day a week students will learn in a state-of-the-art lab at IBM.   5, 6 OCRI

  Activity Air Quality Measurement Workshop Air Quality Measurement Workshop is a one day duble-track SHSM focused workshop on Environment and Health-Wellness at college for students to learn about the different components and issues related to Air Quality in their work and living environment.  It will introduce building environmental systems and indoor quality issues, environmental concerns, codes, standards, acts and regulations in terms of the breadth of skills and competencies required to follow a career in building environmental systems.   Activity Public Water Treatment Facility Visit Water Treatment Facilities Visit is a one day Environment focused SHSM public facilities visit. During this visit students will be familiar with technologies, equipment and processes involved in the city water treatment centers.
The availability of potable water has risen in terms of being problematic in countries around the world as well as Canada.  This one-day activity will focus on how water is made safe to drink in our large metropolitan areas.   40 students plus 7 teachers.

  Activity Eco-Friendly Building Design Eco-Friendly Buildings Design Workshop is a one day double-track SHSM focused workshop on Environment and Construction at college for students to learn about the different components and issues in designing environmental-friendly buildings including a tour of a recently constructed commercial eco friendly building.  If we want to see homes and buildings "near carbon zero" by 2050 what will it take.  It is also estimated that new jobs are likely to be created installing measures into households and commercial buildings, while the wider low carbon sector will also see a rise in jobs in the next decade.  These topics will be discussed. 40 student plus 7 teachers.   Activity Electricity in Green Building - Workshop Electricity in Green Buildings Workshop is a one day triple-track SHSM focused workshop on Environment, Energy and Construction at college for students to learn about the different components and issues in designing electrical requirements of eco-friendly buildings. Canada is fortunate to have a significant portion of its energy generated from hydro electric, a green source of renewable energy.  However as demand grows, new hydro electric sources are not available to keep up with the increased consumption.  What are the alternatives of producing electricity and how can buildings be designed to reduce their dependencies on centrally generated power?     40 students plus 7 teachers.   Activity Environmental Friendly Bioproducts Certificate Course Environmental-Friendly Bio-products course is a specialized dual-track Environmrnt & Health SHSM training program with certification on Bio-Products to familiarize students with products which are not hazardous to people and to the earth.

  Activity Environment Planning Occupation Course Occupational Course is a SHSM specialized training program on Environmental Planning which helps students to be more familiar with this occupation through learning and practising.
Careers in Environmental Planning covers a broad spectrum of skills and occupations.  This one-day program will focus specifically on Environment Planning and answer the question of who are the authorities or enterprises looking for environmental planners, what skills and experience is desirable, and where can an environmental career path be found.

  Activity Environmental Careers Path Environmental Careers Path is a one day SHSM focused career day for students at college including interactive presentations and observations on different environmental careers.
Careers with an environmental focus covers a braod spectrum of skills and occupations.  From policy makers, to technology developers, to trades -- all have an environmental thrust to them and are inter-linked and inter-related with the environment.   Career paths involving the different paths will be discussed and the programs from the local colleges and universities will be covered.    40 students plus 7 teachers.

  Activity Green Building Occupation Day A double-track SHSM specialized career program on Environment and Construction which helps students to be more familiar with these occupations by learning and practising. From loft insulation to thermal efficient windows and combined with heating, cooling and ventilating, all play prominently in the planning, construction and creation of Green Buildings.  Zero carbon target is a combination of conservation and the use of alternative material and renewable energy sources.  This one-day activity will cover the diversity of coccupations in creating a green building and looking at a zero carbon footprint.

  Activity ICT Research Career Discovery at NRC During this one-day ICT SHSM focused Research Career Discovery students become familiar with the research activities of the National Research Council from the Information and Communication Technology perspective.
As computers contribute more to polution than does the airline industry, this one-day activity will focus on what is being done in the design of computer components as well as in the construction of data centres to get to a zero carbon footprint.  While significant technology development is required to reach this goal, there is much to consider with the use of present technology.   40 students plus 7 teachers.

  Activity Recycling Job Shadowing Recycling Job Shadowing is a one day Environment SHSM hands-on experience for students to become familiar with the details of an ccupation in a recycling plant. The students will have the opportunity to experience and observe a real working environment.

  Activity Student Success Planning Model The purpose of this activity is to develop a comprehensive planning framework to be used by School Boards in Planning Students Success Activities. The intent is to be able to inform partners, private sector companies, industries, and colleges as to the type of activities and subjects that the school boards are open to and seeking involvement in enriching and expanding course offerings and student experiences.
